Zimbra Collaboration Suite Projects: Overview

This pilot evaluation has ended.  These pages are no longer relevant for the proposed service.  A production service is being deployed as University Collaboration Suite (UCS) beginning Summer 2011. Please see your ITS Consultant for more information.

Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) is collection of services and tools for supporting eCollaboration in a multitude of environments.

The predominant features of interest are its email and calendaring systems, in addition to a high level of extensibility and customization. Another valuable feature is its ability to interoperate with Microsoft Exchange for calendaring functions, providing a nearly seamless joining of Windows clients, and Non-Windows clients, scheduling environments. This capacity, taken in view of minimal to non-existent support for the OS X and Linux platforms by the eCollaboration software offerings previously evaluated by ITS, has led to a number of departments, Colleges, and Organizations within the University expressing serious interest in ZCS.

ZCS is also being strongly considered as a replacement for the current University Calendaring Service, as Oracle has announced the end-of-life for their Oracle Calendar product in October 2011. To address this more pressing need for a calendar replacement, and simultaneously assess its viability as an eCollaboration platform, ITS has initiated a series of projects related to ZCS. In specific, one project relating to the financial viability has been completed, and two projects covering the technical viability are ongoing.

  • Financial Assessment (Completed 05/07/2010)
  • Integration and Feature Testing (Completed)
  • Calendar Pilot (Completed 09/2010)
  • HA Cluster Design and Testing (Ongoing)
  • Production Migration (In-Planning)

This page will continue to be updated with further information, including links to relevant data, as the project continues.
