Authentication

Authentication is the process by which a user interacts with a computer and a computer program to validate or confirm one's identity. This may be performed via the correct combination of username and password, presentation of digital certificate, or other methods.

Authentication is employed with several prominent University services to provide protection of digital identities. Users with Access and FPS Accounts use their user IDs and passwords for authentication to utilize services that require authentication. Methods for authentication include Kerberos and Penn State WebAccess.

After one has authenticated, one may then be authorized to access a given resource.
